Day 10: Working on the Farm

The break at the waterfall was much needed after lots of sweat was lost and blisters gained from clearing out fields on the farm.

We got up early and had a breakfast of bread, jelly, and peanut butter. We went straight to clear some fields. First someone would go through the field with an axe, then again with a hoe, and then someone would get the rocks and the weeds. We turned about four fields, one of them was pretty big. One field was picked for rocks and weeds, while the others were only turned by lunch time.
I gratefully accepted Dal Bhat and potatoes and even asked for another helping. We then rinsed off the mud at the natural pool and came back for a rest. I read for a little while before we were taken to see this waterfall. We were the first group to ever go to it and two guys with machetes were hacking away a path as we went.
The waterfall was gorgeous and much needed after the work that morning. We stayed and swam in the water for a while, but eventually went back for an afternoon snack of biscuits and tea. We then headed back into the fields to get the rocks and weeds out of the other fields. We were very thorough and it took us a few hours to finish.
We then had an hour before dinner to clean up and I read some more. Once again we had Dal Bhat and potatoes. I spent the rest of the evening reading and then packed up my stuff to go back to the orphanage tomorrow.
Glad you were able to get a little rest from working in the fields. The handles are so short on the tools ... everyone had to bend way over! Good thing you are all young. That would KILL my back! Ugh! Do you know what they plan to plant in those fields? It seems as if your hard work is truly helpful to them as it took a group of you to complete it in a few days. Does this food they plant go to the orphanage?
