A beautiful rest day filled with black forest cake and lots of reading proved to be a nice relaxing day.

After a late breakfast of cornflakes and hot milk we set out for a hike up about 400m, which puts us at almost 5000m. Today was our second and last rest day. We quickly worked our way up a dusty, rocky route. Once at the top we stayed there for 30 minutes to get our bodies used to the altitude. I talked with Katy, drank water, and enjoyed some snacks of peanuts, dried mango, and chocolate. We then descended while our leaders went up to further acclimate.

I read while awaiting my lunch of tomato soup, which turned out to have more garlic than tomato. With an empty stomach we headed to a bakery where I had a black forest cake. My sweet tooth was settled, but my stomach was still grumbling so I had some peanuts and read before dinner.

After finishing my book I handed it off to Ryan to read. Katy was almost finished with her book and offered it to me when she was done. For dinner I made the good/bad choice of having a veggie burger. It tasted delicious, but upset my stomach.

Later while waiting in line for the bathroom I looked up at the stars. The sky was so clear and the light pollution so minimal I could see the Milky Way. I was mesmerized by the stars and sat there in the cold looking up at them for a while.

I made my way back to my cold room and repacked my bag for tomorrow. I changed into my long underwear, tucked my clothes under my comforter and got in my sleeping bag. The past few nights haven't been very restful, but I was hoping tonight would be better.

It is surprising to me that there are so many bakeries (Chocolate cake, apple pie, etc) and that you wanted to eat that, even though the other traditional food wasn't appetizing. I know the altitude affects taste buds. Maybe this is why sweets were appetizing?

Smart to tuck your clothes into the sleeping bag. Hope you slept well. Was the tossing and turning due to cold, uncomfortable bed, or upset tummy? Or all 3?
