Having a discussion with some of the local women, supporting women by getting Henna and snacks, and spreading love the on the last night were my three favorite moments in Kario.

After having one of the most incredible weeks of my life in Kairo, Zanzibar, I wanted to write about three of my top moments.

Having a Discussion with Local Woman

We had the opportunity to speak with some of the women from Kairo. One of the project coordinators, Vivian, translated for us. We spent about two hours asking lots of questions about life in Zanzibar. They were very open and willing to answer all of our questions.

We learned that they have free access to birth control and can give birth for free if they go to a government hospital. It may not be as nice as a private hospital, but it is free.

My favorite question that was asked was "what makes you happy?" Every woman answered by first saying "I am happy every day, but I am most happy when..." It was amazing to see how they enjoy life to the fullest every day and appreciate the little things in life that are often overlooked.

It was inspiring to be surrounded by such amazing women who spend every day appreciating life and what it has to offer as well as what they have rather than always searching for something else. I learned a lot from their attitudes towards life and hope to be even half as grateful as them one day.

Spreading Love to my Fellow Volunteers

For our last night in Kairo the leaders set up a mat in front of our house with lights strung from the trees. Here we read good vibes and and then played a 'game' called tap someone who...

The game is simple. Everyone closes their eyes and the person reading taps a couple of people to open their eyes, stand up, and tap anyone who applies to the statement read. They walk around for 10 or so statements then sit back down and new people stand up.

Some examples are: "tap someone who inspires you"

"tap someone who makes you laugh"

"tap someone who you want to be more like"

"tap someone who has a beautiful smile"

"tap someone who is a hard worker" etc.

It was a great way to show and receive love from the fellow volunteers and it inspired me to be more appreciative of others and what they do that helps, inspires, and supports me.

Supporting the Women of Kairo

We were given a few opportunities to support the local women. One was

when they made snacks for us to buy that were so delicious. They also all had different business and they invited us to their homes to see what they were selling. One woman sold dresses and almost every single girl bought one.

On the last day we got henna and hair braiding from some of the women that were taking English classes. Statistically speaking empowering the women will in turn improve the quality of life for all the other people in the community.

GIVE made sure to give the women ample opportunities to use their skills to make money and even took a few women to a workshop to learn to make soap after we left.
